TPA Encourages Families to

Read Aloud to Children!

According to the U.S. Dept. of Education Committee on Reading, the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children; and, it is a practice that should continue throughout the grade levels.

Sharing Promising Practices

The Parent Academy Welcomes Educational Leaders

TPA has been visited by educational leaders from school districts in Boston, Houston and Washington, D.C. and graduate students from Columbia University Teachers' College.  In July, The Knight Foundation convened a focus groups of parents, district administrators, PTA and TPA staff to learn how TPA is changing the dynamic of family/school partnerships and parent involvement.  PTA/PTSA President, Ms. Ivelisse Castro, stated "The Parent Academy has been one of the change agents for the way that parents and schools collaborate."

A Night of Science and Discovery

TPA Family Learning Event at the Miami Science Museum

Over 600 family members attended TPA's free family learning event June 23rd from 5pm to 8pm at the Miami Science Museum.  Families were awed by the breathtaking "Dinosaurs of China" exhibit which featured 14 dinosaurs that roamed the earth 70 to 170 million years ago.  Families enjoyed the planetarium shows, the Electricity Show and took part in interactive science experiments presented especially for them.  The costumed character Curious George toured the exhibits, too, to everyone's surprise and delight.  Children and their parents listened to stories and created dinosaur arts and crafts to round out a full evening of family learning and fun.  When families spend quality time in enriching environments, they create a reservoir of experiences that they may discuss together, expand vocabulary and build background knowledge necessary for successful literacy development.
