The Parent Academy $1.8 Million Dollars

Knight Foundation President Alberto Ibargüen, Mayor Manny Diaz, Superintendent Dr. Rudy Crew at the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation awards ceremony held at Morningside Elementary School on November 7, 2007.  The Parent Academy was honored to accept a three year $1.8 million dollar grant to increase the scope and reach of its programs.

Distinguished Speakers Take Center Stage at The Parent Academy's Family Learning Events

Dr. Susan B. NeumanDr. Susan B. Neuman, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education, author, professor and expert in early literacy shared her joy in reading with families at The Parent Academy's Early Literacy Family Learning Event sponsored by The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation on October 26, 2007, at the Miami Science Museum.  Family members sang along with "David Grover and the Big Bear Band," created arts & crafts projects, observed science demonstrations, and explored the museum exhibits.  The setting perfectly showcased Dr. Neuman's message of exposing children to content-rich environments to build their literacy skills.

                                         

science museum sept. 22September 22, 2007,  author and dietician Dr. Claudia Gonzalez, encouraged families to eat healthy and be fit.  Juicy Juice sponsored The Parent Academy's Health and Wellness Family Learning Event event at the Miami Science Museum.  Zumba dancing, music time, storytelling, arts & crafts, the museum exhibits and the planetarium show were enjoyed by over 2500 family members!

 

Florida Marlins President and CEO, David Samson, scored a home run for The Parent Academy families at the pre-game Signature Lecture about the importance of making family life a number one priority.

 

The Parent Academy Partners to Host Professional Development Workshops 

Through the generous support of The Early Childhood Initiative Foundation, Dr. Susan B. Neuman, renowned expert in the field of early literacy, presented two workshops on "Nurturing Knowledge: The Five Essential Elements of Early Literacy" for M-DCPS pre-K, kindergarten and elementary school teachers, and early childhood center providers on October 26-27, 2007.  Dr. Neuman has an extensive body of research for parents and teachers about Nurturing Knowledge.


 

M-DCPS Office of Curriculum and Instruction, Just Read, Florida!, and Volunteer Florida Foundation partnered with The Parent Academy to bring Families Building Better Readers developer,  Dr. Angela Martin, to conduct a Train the Trainer workshop for

M-DCPS reading coaches, media specialists, community involvement specialists and child care providers. Watch for a District-wide Families Building Better Readers Day January 2008.  Families Building Better Readers teaches parents 10 simple strategies to help them help their children improve their reading performance.

Cultural Treasures During Veterans Day Weekend

 

GlobalBeatParents and their children marched to the GlobalBeat at the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts, learned about Aztec Culture and made a Columbian pyramid at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and

created and illustrated their own poems at the Miami Art Museum.  Families also watched a fairy tale come to life by The PlayGround Theatre's mime troupe at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, and enjoyed performances of "A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings"  at The PlayGround Theatre.
