Dear Miami-Dade:

The Parent Academy was created under Superintendent Dr. Rudolph F. Crew’s leadership, and officially launched in August 2005. The Parent Academy evolved because of the need for parents to become more involved in their children’s education. When families become involved in the educational process, students, schools, and communities benefit because strong home-school partnerships help all stakeholders focus on the issue of student achievement. (Caplan, 2000). The Parent Academy, which serves all parents in Miami-Dade County, defines “parent” as anyone who is a caretaker of our students, and recognizes the role the extended family and older siblings have in children’s education. All Parent Academy workshops and family learning events are free. The program is funded by private donations and grants.

Riverside Elementary School parents who completed The Parent Academy’s PASSport-Parents Assuring Student Success- program had an “ultimate moment of success” exclaimed The Parent Academy teacher, Noema Barraza, as Superintendent Crew presented them their certificates of completion on November 29, 2006. Not only did Dr. Crew address the gathering in Spanish, he visited with every parent personally, staying throughout the event to celebrate with them and their families.

Through generous support from the Knight Foundation, The Parent Academy has partnered for the past 18 months with the CPC/All-Aboard Family Literacy Program at Riverside Elementary. This highly successful collaboration has brought high quality parenting skills workshops, educational resources and literacy-based excursions to the families of this Little Havana neighborhood.

The Parent Academy presents PASSport workshops free of charge to parents of children of all ages. PASSport to Success is a skill building series of workshops designed to help parents help their children succeed in school.

Imagine being able to save $400 and qualifying for more money when filing your income tax return! That is what happened to Yohanny Garcia who accepted an automated phone invitation from The Parent Academy to attend Super Tax Day.

Garcia and her son, a first grade student in Miami- Dade County Public Schools, went to the Super Tax Day event held on January 27th at the Stephen P. Clark Government Center on 111 NW 1st Street. There they learned about free tax preparation and the Earned Income Tax Credit program. For her efforts and follow-up, Yohanny happily reported “I got more money back this year, and for free!”

Super Tax Day was sponsored by The Parent Academy, the Prosperity Campaign, Human Services Coalition, Office of Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Washington Mutual and The Children’s Trust.

There is still time to take advantage of free tax preparation. To find a listing of the sites in your neighborhood that offer free tax preparation, please go to The Parent Academy and click on the Prosperity Campaign icon.

The Parent Academy had the good fortune to be a part of the Super Bowl XLI action this year at the NFL Football Clinic led by the Miami Dolphin players at Orange Bowl Stadium on Saturday, January 27th.

With their parents cheering from the sidelines, more than 600 boys and girls ages 8-14 participated in the non-contact clinics which emphasized health and wellness along with the fundamentals of the game.

For many children, it was the opportunity of a lifetime to learn football drills, get autographs, and spend a great day with the current Dolphin players such as Ronnie Brown and Channing Crowder. For the parents, it was a super day to strengthen bonds with their children. At the end of the day, every child received a special gift – a Super Bowl XLI duffle bag filled with a first aid kit/water bottle, and a Super Bowl XLI hat.
